Listening to Birth Stories Helped Me Have a Natural Birth

When I received an email from Gina explaining that after three medicated hospital births she had successfully had a natural birth with her fourth baby, and that she almost entirely credited listening to other women’s birth stories on the podcast for this accomplishment, I knew I had to hear her stories. And her note to me was so inspiring that I’m sharing some of that here too!

drug free birth after epidural births

Hi Bryn!

I’ve been wanting to email you for several weeks to say thank you for your incredible podcast. I gave birth to my 4th baby a little over two months ago, and after 3 births with epidurals (and 2 inductions), this was my first unmedicated birth. I decided to go the unmedicated route for a few reasons this time around, which was a complete 180 from my previous thinking! I am not someone who has ever gotten really into all-natural things, and even with this birth I didn’t really want to use any specific technique like hypnobirthing or even use a midwife or birth center. And I’m starting to think I may be the only unmedicated birth proponent who has never even watched The Business of Being Born! 🙂 Basically I just wanted to have my baby in the hospital, with my doctor that I loved, but do it unmedicated.

Anyway, that’s all to say that your podcast was essentially my main method of birth prep! I read a couple of books, but mostly I just listened to The Birth Hour episodes daily for the last couple of months. I drew so much strength from hearing different women’s stories and hearing many of the possible ways birth can go – but still with a positive outcome.

It helped the whole birthing process seem very normal and natural to me, and not something that I needed to be anxious of fearful of. That couldn’t have been a bigger blessing, because when my baby decided to come (a week before my due date AND on the day we were moving!) it was such a whirlwind and I know that without the mental preparation I had from listening to your podcast, I would have been a total wreck! I was able to stay completely calm through my intense and crazy labor and delivery (we left our house at 5 am and barely made it to the hospital in time for my son to be born at 5:27!)

So thank you!!! Thank you for making this awesome podcast that helped me so much and made my birth into such a positive experience! I still look back on that day and feel so happy and empowered. And I am 100% certain that a big part of the reason it was so great was because of your podcast. My husband laughs at me because I still listen to every new episode (and sometimes old episodes), I just can’t get enough of it! Thank you again for making a big difference in so many people’s lives, including mine!

Gina Kynaston Bio

Gina Kynaston lives south of Salt Lake City, Utah, with her husband and four kids. She is lucky to get to be a stay-at-home mom and her days spent with four little ones ages 7 and under are always busy, usually exhausting, yet really wonderful. Each of Gina’s birth experiences have been different, and she is a firm believer that there is no one “right” way to give birth. After having three babies with epidurals, she became interested in unmedicated birth, and through that process has learned firsthand that what feels right for one birth may be totally different than what feels right the next time, or for somebody else.
