Amniotic Fluid Embolism Birth Story + Supporting Others through their own Birth Trauma

amniotic embolism birth

Kayleigh @thebirthtrauma_mama had a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy. As a first-time mom, she knew birth would be one of the most challenging, but hopefully beautiful and empowering experiences of her life. She prepared in every way she could for her birth, but what she didn’t prepare for, what she couldn’t prepare for was to almost lose her life in the process. Kayleigh experienced an Amniotic Fluid Embolism when she was 10cm dilated with her son. She required a perimortem c-section, receiving CPR while her son was delivered. Through the tireless work of her incredible medical team and days of life-saving interventions, Kayleigh and her son both survived. But, as she soon realized, leaving the hospital was only the beginning of this journey. Birth trauma and its far-reaching impact would devastate her first year postpartum and forever change her life. This experience has served as the catalyst for Kayleigh’s support and advocacy work within the birth trauma community.

Long Epidural Birth followed by Surprise Homebirth + Postpartum Anxiety and Depression

accidental homebirth

Adina got pregnant with her first baby in 2017, and her daughter was born after a long hospital birth that included an epidural and other interventions to help labor move along. Shortly after birth she developed postpartum anxiety and depression, amid breastfeeding issues and challenges with insomnia. Her second baby was born in May 2020, shortly after the pandemic began. She planned another hospital birth, however her son’s labor progressed much faster than her first and he was unexpectedly born at home with assistance from her doula. She struggled again with postpartum anxiety and depression, but was able to push through breastfeeding challenges and establish a successful nursing relationship.

NICU after CMV diagnosis

Erin had a smooth pregnancy until the end, when concerns about congenital CMV were brought up. After a crazy move across the country, her water broke unexpectedly at 35 weeks. With a labor that refused to progress, her son was born via C section and just barely making it to 36 weeks. This was followed by a week long NICU stay, and a tumultuous postpartum as her family navigated the complexities of a congenital CMV diagnosis. Cesarean Birth after Surprise Preeclampsia & Placental Abruption

cesarean-skin-to-skin

Corinne went into labor in the evening of the 29th of August with light contractions and decided to sleep for strength in her labor. The next morning Corinne woke up around 7am still in early labor and decided to shower since she’d probably give birth that day. In the shower, fresh blood started coming out of her, enough to scare her. She called the midwife who, advised her to go the hospital, where she was admitted and found out she had preeclampsia which caused a placental abruption. After hours of being put on multiple medications to lower blood pressure and trying to progress labor naturally, at 3am on August 31st Corinne was induced with Pitocin. The next morning Corinne experience more bleeding and no progress in labor which gave her two options, break her waters or Caesarian. Since Corinne didn’t want the situation to become even more dangerous, she had a Cesarean. Which saved her life and baby Rowan.

Emergency C-Section under General Anesthesia in Norway and Hard Postpartum with Milk Protein Allergy

Anita Hulkkonen birth story

After a confusing start to pregnancy caused by inconsistent tests and symptoms, Anita experienced a progressively easier first pregnancy. After passing her due date, she eventually scheduled an induction, but went into labour naturally 5 hours before.

After labouring unmedicated for hours, she got an epidural, but never dilated past 4cm. Professionals opted for an emergency c-section under anaesthesia after a couple scary incidents of losing the fetal heartbeat.

In her episode, Anita shines light on midwife led prenatal care in Norway, and talks about her challenging postpartum period after an intense birth experience, as well as how she is trying to overcome the grief of not being able to consciously witness her son’s birth.

Birth Center Transfer during Pushing Phase

Alexxis Ellison birth story

Alexxis’ birth story had a lot of unexpected changes. From being considered high risk in the first trimester to then planning an unmedicated and intervention free delivery at a local birthing center while in her third trimester. Alexxis labored at home for 12 hours. When she arrived at the birthing center she was already 8cm dilated.  After another 12 hours of unmedicated active labor her husband drove her to the nearby hospital where she received an epidural and gave birth to their baby girl hours later. Although it was tough and she had to deviate from her original birth plan, Alexxis experienced a very fulfilling labor and is now a proud new momma.

2nd Unmedicated Hospital Birth and Positive Postpartum

Rachael’s first birth was a 9 hr unmedicated labor and delivery, but then two months later she had two craniotomies to remove a subdural hematoma. Despite that jarring postpartum experience, she was eager to have another baby, so right around her daughter’s first birthday Rachael and Zane were excited to find out they were pregnant again. Once again, Rachael had a very straightforward, easy (as easy as possible) pregnancy. She was excited to give birth in the same hospital with an OB/midwife practice, but this time she wanted to use a doula to have more experienced support. At 39+2, Rachael started to have cramps and pretty quickly they left for the hospital. When they arrived she was already 6cm dilated, and they quickly set up the labor and delivery room with twinkle lights and started playing the hypno birthing tracks. After an intense labor, Willow was born at 10:18pm after just 7 hrs. The first night in the hospital was difficult but the rest of postpartum was very restful and sweet.

Rachael DeGraffenried Bio

Rachael is 32 years old and lives in Western Colorado with her husband Zane and two daughters, Juniper (3) and Willow (1). Rachael stays home with her crazy girls and Zane is a software engineer. She also teaches a mom fitness class at the local rec center and line-dancing at a local watering hole.

Two Unmedicated Hospital Births, Vaginal Footling Breech Delivery and Vanishing Twin Syndrome

vaginal breech footling birth story

Katy and her husband Andy welcomed their first daughter in February 2020, just before the world shut down. An uncomplicated and mostly unremarkable pregnancy, followed by a dreamy 3+ weeks early, mild, precipitous labor and unmedicated birth, led Katy to believe her story wasn’t “birth hour” worthy! That all changed when she got pregnant for the second time and experienced a vanishing twin and the surviving twin flipped between breach to head down throughout the pregnancy. Confirmed head down by the OB that morning, they arrived at the hospital an hour after contractions began (and less than 30 minutes before baby Lena arrived) when the OB resident said there were feet hanging out of the vagina. Lena’s head was stuck in the birth canal for 5-7 minutes and was pulled out by the OB not breathing and with a dangerously low heart rate. Miraculously she only spent 2 days in the NICU and came home as perfect as could be. Connect with Katy @carolglawrence on Instagram.
