Postpartum Story: Exclusively Pumping & Pelvic Floor Recovery

exclusively pumping

After dealing with hyperemesis throughout pregnancy, Katie was so excited when her water broke unexpectedly at 37 weeks. After a birth center transfer, pitocin, epidural, and 41 hours of labor, Roman was finally born vaginally. His delivery was complicated by a shoulder dystocia, leaving Katie with several second degree tears. Roman had a week long NICU stay, and during that time, Katie and Roman had a difficult time breastfeeding. She was hoping this would improve when they got home; but the breastfeeding struggles and colicky infant was stressful and nobody was sleeping. Katie found that exclusive pumping gave her the resources to enjoy time with her newborn without the pressure of getting baby to latch. Katie describes some difficulties she has dealt with her pelvic floor postpartum and how she has found improvement working with a pelvic floor therapist.

3 Very Different Births, Infant Loss, and Navigating Life in the “Sad Mom Club”

Julia Dixon Birth stories

Julia has had three births and three extremely different birth experiences. The birth of her first daughter was a textbook healthy pregnancy ending with her planned birth center water birth. With the support of her lactation consultant and a local moms group she felt confident in new motherhood. With her second things seemed to be going exactly the same, right down to the time of year and sex of the baby. Their due dates were exactly 25 months apart (11/3/18 and 12/3/20). Julia and her family were able to navigate the stress of covid while also celebrating new life. When Julia started bleeding at home at 39 weeks pregnant, things shifted quickly and aggressively. A placenta abruption, stat c-section, major hemorrhage, neonatal resuscitation, NICU transfer, brain cooling. Rosalind said hello and goodbye on Thanksgiving Day 2020.  Julia and her husband had to learn how to dry up her milk, how to plan a funeral, and how to talk to a two year old about death.

pregnancy and infant loss

8 months after Rosalind’s birth and death, Julia found out she was pregnant again. Trying to navigate grief and fear, she chose a care team and hospital with MFMs and the highest level NICU. She went through high risk care, and tried to get excited that she might actually bring this baby home. She gave birth at 38 weeks via gentle cesarean to a sweet baby boy. Postpartum recovery after a c section and with a living baby was a new experience, but one she was extremely thankful to get to have.

Julia Dixon Bio

Julia and her husband Ethan live in Kentucky with their 3 year old daughter Delia and 5 month old son Clark. They are always missing Rosalind, who would be 2 in November. Julia works in bookkeeping and accounting. In her free time she enjoys crochet, reading, and exploring with her kids.

Two Beautiful Hospital Births—One with an Epidural and One Without

hospital birth

Kate was anticipating a week’s head start of maternity leave before expecting her baby boy to be born, but she realized he had other plans when she went into labor 4 days before her due date. She woke up in the middle of the night with waves of pain radiating down the front of her legs but kept falling asleep in between the waves, until at one point she realized she must be having contractions. She timed them for a while and eventually couldn’t get back to sleep, so she woke her husband and decided to call her OB, who told her to come in. She got up, took a shower, and they called their family members as they headed to the hospital around 5am. Once there, Kate labored for a bit in her L&D room before requesting an epidural, and afterward rested and watched The Office while chatting with some family members who were also there at the hospital with them. Once she was 10 centimeters and fully effaced, she learned it was time to push, pushed for two hours and delivered her sweet baby boy! It was a great, uncomplicated experience with an epidural and a relatively easy physical recovery, which she feels increasingly grateful for.

When Kate found out she was pregnant again at the end of February 2020, she had a different intention for this pregnancy, labor and delivery. She decided she wanted to give birth unmedicated – without the use of epidural – and decided to hire a doula. When COVID-19 spread throughout the United States in March, Kate was faced with a lot of uncertainty and anxiety over herself, her family’s health, and the health of her baby, but her Christian faith kept her afloat through the most difficult moments of that year. Kate’s main goal throughout this pregnancy was to be informed about her rights and her options for birth, instead of just accepting what might be considered “the norm”. She didn’t want to think of herself as just a “patient”, and her baby’s birth just a “medical event”, she believed that labor and birth are something that can be enjoyed, and she wanted to feel fully confident in herself and her support team, informed about her options, and calm despite the chaos of the world.

hospital birth story

Kate went into spontaneous labor 2 days before her due date very early in the morning. She was tempted to call her OB again right away (like last time), but called her doula first who encouraged her to continue timing contractions and distract herself if possible. She and her husband got up, enjoyed some time around the house with their toddler, took a walk, played Scrabble and watched their favorite comfort show – The Office. Once her contractions were getting a little bit too intense to talk through, she headed to the hospital where she was 7cm at arrival. With the help of her doula and husband, Kate gave birth to her daughter unmedicated feeling perfectly at peace, confident in herself, and so overwhelmed by the intensity of the experience yet how beautiful it was. This birth experience ignited Kate’s passion for pregnancy and birth, and inspired her to become a birth doula, so that she could support other women and their families during such a monumental and vulnerable time of their lives, and help them know that they too have the right to feel informed, can be empowered in making decisions about their care, and be confident in themselves no matter what their birth situation might look like.

Longer 2nd Birth with Amazing Female Support in Hospital

Liz gave birth to her second baby, Adelaide, at 41 weeks. Her labor was longer than she anticipated since her first baby came in only 8 hrs. Addie was malpositioned and willing to take her time to come out. Liz labored upright with the support of her husband Isaac and her doula Sarah. Her midwife and birth team utilized many resources to try to help Addie descend, including facetiming Liz’s pelvic floor physical therapist for tips. Pitocin was also utilized to help with how inconsistent Liz’s contraction pattern was. When Addie was ready, she finally came out quickly in three pushes weighing 8lbs 7oz. Liz was shocked at the speed of the pushing stage but so glad she was finally out. Liz had only a few minor tears but did have a postpartum hemorrhage that was managed with medications. Liz is so grateful to her amazing birth team – her midwife, doula, pelvic PT and husband. They supported her and provided her with the space to birth Addie in the way Addie needed!

Pregnancy After 40: Cesarean & VBAC Birth Stories

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-birth-hour-a-birth-story-podcast/id1041801905

Pat got pregnant with her first baby, Liam, a couple of months shy of her 40th birthday. Despite the anxiety that the statistics for her age made her feel, Pat had a healthy pregnancy. Due to an OP baby and lack of support, a difficult five-day labor lead to a cascade of interventions. After getting stuck at 6cm and having the baby suffer decels, the birth ended on a c-section–– something far from the unmedicated birth she so much had prepared for and dreamed of. During her labor and stay in the hospital, she felt unheard and mistreated by some of the residents, which added to the trauma she carried from the birth.

When she got pregnant with her second son Oliver, she made sure to hire a doula and surround herself with the support necessary to try to have a different experience this time. This was also an uncomplicated pregnancy, despite being 42 this time around. She also switched providers to a specialist in VBACs. When the labor began, Pat recognized some of the same patterns in this labor (baby was also OP) and triggered some of the trauma, but with the help of her doula and rockstar husband, Pat headed to the hospital after two days of labor and she was already at an 8, which made her feel so proud of herself. This time, no residents were allowed and she had an incredible midwife, Rachel, who was a blessing. Although the birth ended up with a VBAC, something she had dreamed of and makes her feel proud of herself, Pat once more has struggled with the treatment received, this time from the OB, and is trying to process the experience and coming to terms with it.

Ideal Birth Center Birth with Postpartum Breastfeeding Challenges + Career Change

postpartum babywearing ergobaby

Episode 742

Julie had an uncomplicated pregnancy under the care of midwives, made both harder and easier by COVID restrictions (she didn’t get to see family and friends but she did get to rest as much as she wanted and never dealt with unsolicited comments from strangers). After hiring a doula and talking in detail about birth options, she made the choice to switch to a birth center. Julie prepared for birth using hypnobirthing, and was surprised to find that she enjoyed doing meditations before bed with her husband, Matt. She went into labor at 40+5 following a membrane sweep, and went to the birth center after a fast and intense early labor. Julie used all the tools available to her at the birth center, including the tub, and eventually gave birth in the water after about 8 hours of active labor. Her daughter, Lily, was born on Julie and Matt’s 5th wedding anniversary, and the new parents shared some champagne to celebrate both occasions while resting together.

birth-center-waterbirth

After this smooth welcome to the world, breastfeeding difficulties quickly developed. Lily had a lip and tongue tie which caused weight gain issues and unbearable pain while nursing. She had a release at 5 days old, which led to improvements, but Julie struggled with anxiety and stress associated with these early issues, as well as persistent pain and discomfort while nursing. She was eventually able to establish a feeding routine that worked, but she was never able to enjoy the breastfeeding process and dealt with recurring clogs. Julie also struggled to decide whether or not to return to work, and after choosing to stay home with Lily to pursue new career opportunities, she was surprised and encouraged by how many women reached out to tell her they had also left the workforce when their children were small and never regretted it for a minute. Julie was happy to find a job that better fit her lifestyle when Lily was 8 months old, and despite challenging newborn days, she has enjoyed every stage more than the last, especially after successfully weaning when Lily turned one.

Her son was born at 39 weeks weighing in at 9lbs 14oz and 23in long. She experienced 18 hours of unmedicated labor including an hour and a half of pushing along with some complications near the end due to a vaginal septum and extensive tearing. Two Positive Post-dates Induction Birth Stories

Teddy’s Birth

Whitney got married in 2015 and spent the first 4 years of marriage completing her education and settling into her career. She was overjoyed to discover she was pregnant in October 2019. She planned for an unmedicated hospital birth with a family medicine doctor. Despite some first trimester food aversions and exhaustion, her pregnancy was smooth and free of complications. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the US at the beginning of Whitney’s third trimester, leading to a furlough from her job and a lot of uncertainty regarding her birth and post-partum experience. She made the most of her time at home, listening to every episode of The Birth Hour, walking miles per day, and reading every birth book she could get her hands on. Despite her desire to go into labor on her own, Whitney ended up with a long post-dates induction at 41+3. Even though she did not achieve her goal of an undmedicated birth, the birth of Whitney’s son Teddy was one of the most beautiful, empowering days of her life.

Harvey’s Birth

After a chaotic post-partum after Teddy’s birth (selling and buying a house, a new job, and a big move all in his first year), Whitney and her husband were excited to add a second child to their family. Whitney became pregnant in October 2021 and her pregnancy quickly followed the pattern of her first – food aversions, nausea, exhaustion – but thankfully remained complication-free. Whitney established care with a midwife and planned again for an unmedicated hospital birth with the goal of going into labor on her own. Despite trying everything (except castor oil) to start labor at home, Whitney had the medication-free post-dates induction of her dreams. Baby Harvey entered the world with the fetal ejection reflex in one of the coolest experiences Whitney has ever had. Postpartum with Harvey was joyful and relaxing!

Postpartum Story: High Blood Pressure, Hemangiomas, and Blood in Baby’s Stool

jenny-novak-birth-story

Jenny’s pregnancies were considered high risk due to pre-existing hypertension and a history of cancer. She was induced at 40 weeks with a long labor and eventual C-section for her first baby. For her second baby, she strongly desired to avoid induction and go into labor spontaneously so she hired a doula to help advocate for a VBAC. After a roller coaster of medical interventions at the end of her second pregnancy, she had a scheduled C-section at 41 weeks. During her postpartum period she experienced several challenges including postpartum high blood pressure, blood in baby’s stool, hemangiomas, and breastfeeding challenges.
