Positive Epidural Birth Story after Pregnancy During a Deployment

Laura and Jayson got pregnant in October 2022 and found out just 2 weeks before Jayson deployed for 7 months. Laura was 39 weeks when they went out for pizza on the night of June 30th. They enjoyed what they didn’t know what their last night as just the two of them. They went to bed that night not knowing that their worlds would change the next morning. Laura woke up to very intense contractions at 1:30am. She tried to go back to sleep but the pain was too severe. She tried to get in the shower but the contractions were getting more intense and were coming back to back with no break in between. She finally woke up Jayson and they were on the way to the hospital at 3am.

Laura was 5 cm dilated and 90% effaced when they got there. She immediately asked for an epidural and within 30 minutes she could finally relax. The contractions were still really intense though and back to back so she had to get medicine to slow them down so that the baby would not become distressed. By 8am it was time to start pushing. Baby girl Peyton was born at 9:28am at exactly 9 lbs. Everything was going smoothly until this point. The placenta was not coming out and after about 20-30 minutes the doctor said they would have to intervene because Laura was losing too much blood. Jayson took the baby because Laura started to get really lightheaded and nauseous. They finally got the placenta out but Laura lost 2 liters of blood.

They were monitored for a while in the labor and delivery room until being moved to postpartum. Breastfeeding had a learning curve but they eventually got the hang of it and 2 days later they were both healthy and able to go home. Connect with Laura on Instagram @lajohnson21.

Positive Unmedicated Hospital Birth with Gestational Diabetes

At 26 weeks pregnant Amanda was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes and faced an uphill battle to keep her birth aligned with evidenced based interventions. GDM was managed with strict diet but came with added anxiety and increasing distrust of providers. At 36 weeks prodromal labor started with contractions taking place nightly 10-6 minutes apart. Early labor lasted for days starting at 39 weeks with active labor kicking off immediately following Amandas water breaking. Amanda’s daughter Lily was born only 3 hours after her water breaking at 39+3 in the hospital with the support of her husband, Doula, and staff. Birth was followed by an emotional and painful postpartum recovery that included her dad’s lung transplant 7 days postpartum.

Empowering Pregnancy, Positive Hospital Birth, followed by Postpartum Depression and Rage

overcoming postpartum rage

When Mary found out she was pregnant, her priority was to find a supportive and educational prenatal yoga community, and a doula. With these tools she experienced an empowering pregnancy that she enjoyed and embraced. At almost 40 weeks her doctor recommended an induction due to polyhydraminos diagnosis. Mary’s water ended up breaking after an induction massage, and she felt confident  about her hospital birth plan. Early labor was long for her, but active labor was quicker. Shortly after starting the epidural she felt the urge to push and her baby boy was out in three pushes. Even though her pregnancy and birth were good experiences, she had a rough start to postpartum, struggling with rage and depression. Working with a sleep training consultant for her baby, and seeking counseling herself, she was able to overcome these feelings.

Two Mom Family Tackles IUI & IVF + 3 Epidural Hospital Birth Stories

getting pregnant same sex couple

Kelsey loves nothing more than sharing her birth stories with anyone who wants to listen. In this episode, she shares the birth stories of each of her three children. Using an anonymous sperm donor, her and her wife completed 8 IUI cycles before becoming pregnant with their son. A fairly normal pregnancy followed by a medicated, hospital birth at 39 weeks.

When they decided to try again, they were faced with secondary infertility. For two years, they endured unsuccessful IUIs, three IVF retrievals, a miscarriage and many failed transfers. After changing fertility clinics, they were thrilled to learn they would have another baby boy. An unexpected gestational diabetes diagnosis threw her for a bit of a loop, but a pretty standard second pregnancy. At 38 weeks, baby boy was born after a medicated birth, in the hospital, 2 days before Christmas.

They knew they wanted one more and with 3 healthy embryos waiting in the freezer, they tried again for number 3. After one failed transfer, they were again over the moon to find out that they were expecting a little girl. Another gestational diabetes diagnosis and lots of pelvic pain and pressure made for her roughest pregnancy. At 3 days shy of 40 weeks, her biggest baby arrived at the hospital after another medicated birth.

Quite the rollercoaster and infertility journey, but now her family is complete, and all is as it should be.

Cailyn switched from care with a midwife at a birthing center within a hospital to a homebirth midwife at 30 weeks. Cailyn had a beautifully challenging 32 hour labor and long pushing stage surrounded by her amazing husband, wonderful midwife, doula and birth photographer. Later that day her son then needed a little bit more  support so they transferred to the local hospital and spent some time in the nursery there until they were finally discharged home after 48 hours. They then had a challenging postpartum feeding journey that consisted of months of triple feeding and donor milk.

Finally Pregnant! Endometriosis, Infertility and Unmedicated Hospital Birth

emily sutton birth story

Endometriosis is a silent epidemic – affecting more than 1 in 10 women in their child bearing years. This incurable, painful disease takes an average of 10 years to diagnose. Endometriosis happens when uterine-like lining grows outside of the uterus and can only be confirmed through surgery. Main symptoms include severe cramps, heavy periods, pelvic or abdominal pain during your period, lower back or leg pain, pain with sex, stomach problems like bloating or nausea, painful urination or bowel movements, infertility, fatigue or depression. Less common symptoms include breathing or shoulder pain. Red flags include having to go to the ER for pain, if you have to get up in the middle of the night to change your pad or tampon or if you consistently have to miss work or school on your period, you should talk to your doctor about possible endometriosis. There is a genetic link – if your mother has endometriosis, you are 7 times more likely to have it.

Emily Sutton shares her personal story of pain and triumph on her journey with endometriosis. Emily and her husband Michael battled infertility through multiple procedures and treatments. Following years of failures and heartbreak, the couple successfully conceived through their second embryo transfer (IVF).  After months of preparing for a natural birth through Hypnobirthing and meditation, Emily was able to have a beautiful, unmedicated hospital birth, delivering a healthy baby girl!

Four Vaginal Hospital Birth Stories Spanning Over 13 Years

hospital birth stories

Sheena shares 4 vaginal deliveries spanning over 13 years. Each pregnancy and delivery were different.

Her first, at 22 years old. She experienced awful morning sickness and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. A 14 hour hospital induction with an epidural that failed during a long pushing phase. An episiotomy was needed during delivery and she began hemorrhaging. A blood transfusion was almost needed, but thankfully the bleeding stopped. She had no idea recovery would be so hard.

Sheena’s second pregnancy was her easiest. A breech baby who finally flipped at 37 weeks. A pain free, quick induction. She even got to pull her baby out and onto her chest. Unfortunately a fast delivery caused her prior episiotomy scar and tears to reopen.

Her third pregnancy was a surprise, 8 years after her second. Sheena had a lot of mixed emotions over this pregnancy and felt guilt at the beginning. Soon she began to get excited and was thrilled when she found an incredible OB. Her pregnancy was relatively easy and she went into labor after a membrane sweep at 39 weeks. A shoulder dystocia caused some panic, but was quickly resolved using the McRoberts maneuver.

Sheena’s last baby was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic. A subchorianic hematoma and a marginal cord insertion, made for extra monitoring throughout her pregnancy. She also experience prodromal labor for the first time and it lasted for weeks. She was induced and the induction started out slowly, but ramped up at the end. She went from 6 cm to baby in her arms in 12 minutes.

Empowering Unintended Homebirth after Epidural Hospital Birth

unintended homebirth

Realizing how underprepared she was during her first child’s birth, Magdalena decided to take matters into her own hands and do some serious birth-prep work prior to her second delivery.  She spent nine months listening to podcasts, working with midwives, reading all the books and practicing different laboring techniques to prepare herself for a completely physiological birth.

After 12 hours of what felt like harmonious labor at home, her baby was born accidentally on the bathroom floor while her husband loaded the car for the hospital. Magdalena describes it as the most empowering experience of her life and adds, “the whole story still in some ways feels unreal when I share it.” She adds that “if my story can help just one person or inspire someone to be their own birthing advocate I would be thrilled.”

Planned C-section for Breech and 3 VBACs, 1 Medicated and 2 Unmedicated

vbac birth story

Kacey has experienced a wide range of births including a planned C-section for a Breech presentation and three VBACs, 1 medicated and 2 unmedicated.

Kacey’s first pregnancy was smooth and uneventful up until the 32 week mark when they discovered that her son was in the breech position. The next 7 weeks were spent researching at-home ways to encourage a breech baby to flip as well as conversations with her husband and doctor to weigh their options on delivery. Her and her husband finally settled on a planned C-section as the best option forward for them with the expectation that any future births would be able to be born vaginally if in a better presentation. Her son was born safely into the world on March 15th, 2012 via C-Section. Everything was smoother than she could have imagined. She was able to hold her son in the delivery room while she was closed up, but she didn’t get a chance for skin to skin or an attempt to nurse until a few hours later after she spent some time in post-op recovery. Other than that, everything was very smooth and her recovery, although longer than her vaginal deliveries, was pretty straight forward and smooth.

Two years after her first son was born, Kacey got pregnant with her first daughter. She was hopeful that she would be able to have a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). Although she was hopeful, her and her husband did not do much preparation for the birth as they had taken a hospital birth course when pregnant with their son and felt like it hadn’t prepared them much more than they already knew in regard to birth. Kacey hoped for an unmedicated VBAC with her daughter. Her daughter was head down at their 32 week ultrasound, so the plan was to move forward with a VBAC. She went into labor 2 days before her due date, but due to a high incidence of Braxton’s Hicks contractions, it wasn’t until active labor that night that she was confident it was labor and her and her husband headed to the hospital. Her water broke in her husband’s truck on the way to the hospital and that is when contractions became closer together and more intense. She arrived at the hospital at 3 cm and labored for a few hours. The contractions alternated between manageable and unmanageable and after being checked again and told she was 4 cm, she opted for the epidural. Looking back on her labor afterward, she realized that although she knew what to expect regarding the stages of labor, she was not prepared on how to handle the pain of contractions. She was very much in fear of the pain and tensed up again the intensity of the contraction, rather than relaxing into them and letting her body use the contraction to help her body dilate. After her epidural, she was able to relax and dilated quickly to a 10 within an hour or two. Her daughter was born early in the morning on December 11, 2014. Her recovery was much smoother and shorter than her C-section delivery and she loved the fact that she was able to have the skin-to-skin time after delivery that she missed out on with her son.

Kacey became pregnant with surprise baby #3 (a girl!) when her daughter was just over a year old. After the shock wore off, she saw this birth as an opportunity to redeem her attempt at an unmedicated birth and conquer the fear she experienced during her last labor. Her and her husband took preparation for this birth more seriously and decided that the only way to successfully have an unmedicated birth was to bring their faith in God into every aspect of their life, including the delivery room. They took a faith-based childbirth course through First Birth Ministries and hired a Sister-in-Christ, Shelley Williams (The Salty Doula), as their doula. They not only learned more about how God perfectly created the female body to birth babies, but they were able to see how even in the pain, there was purpose to the pain and that due to this perfect design there was nothing to fear. Kacey went into labor at around 39 weeks pregnant, and once again was in early labor most of the day before realizing it was actual labor getting started. On the evening of January 10th, 2017, her in laws came over to help take care of her older two children (as contractions were becoming stronger), and it was while prepping lunches for the next day in the kitchen that her water broke. She knew she wanted to labor at home as long as possible, but after her husband rushed home from work she was convinced to head into the hospital as the contractions were quickly intensifying. Contractions picked up quickly in duration and intensity on the way to the hospital and she was confident she was pretty far along when she arrived at the hospital. After getting settled and getting checked for dilation she found out she was 3-4cm and was very discouraged based on the intensity level of the contractions. She started to doubt her ability to have the unmedicated birth she desired. Her husband turned on her worship music playlist and read Bible verses from their birth aloud to her between contractions. With his support and the steady presence of their doula, she was able to relax into the contractions and within 30-45 minutes felt her daughter descending the birth canal. Her nurse checked her and realized she was already at 10 cm. Her doctor was able to just get into the room and everything prepped just in time for her daughter to be born a few contractions later. She was able to have extended skin to skin time and her daughter caught onto nursing right away. It was such a change from her last delivery, and even though it was hectic at parts due to how fast everything progressed, she was so thankful she had the unmedicated birth she always wanted.

Kacey’s final pregnancy came during 2020 after the COVID lockdowns allowed her and her husband to reflect and determine that maybe their family wasn’t complete. After getting pregnant with her final son, she knew what it was like to have a redeeming birth free of the fear of labor and knew that this time around she wanted the same. Knowing that it was going to be her last birth, she hoped and prayed that this birth would be a little slower than her fast and furious birth with her daughter so that she could truly soak in the entire experience. After a rough first half of her pregnancy with illness, the second half of her pregnancy was smooth sailing. The morning of March 5, 2021, she woke up in the early hours with what felt like Braxton Hicks contractions and the urge to use the restroom. She was able to fall back to sleep, and when she woke in the morning, she was having what felt like more steady Braxton Hicks contractions. She reached out to her doula and went for a walk, drank some raspberry leaf tea, and while her daughter settled down for her afternoon nap, she did the Miles Circuit (per her doula’s suggestion as she was having some back pain with contractions). On the third round of the circuit, while sitting on top of a birthing ball, she had a very intense contraction and felt her water begin to leak. She called her husband home, let her doula know the situation and jumped in the shower. By the time her mom arrived to watch their other kids, contractions were every 5 minutes and lasting around a minute long. This time around they headed straight into the hospital due to Kacey’s fast previous labor and the fact that this time around she was Strep B positive and wanted to give as much time as possible at the hospital for IV antibiotics. After getting set up at the hospital and informing the nurses that they would not be needing an epidural, Kacey and her husband labored together until their doula arrived an hour or two later. Labor was slower this time around (just as she prayed it would be!), and after alternating between riding the waves of contractions while standing and holding onto her husband, squatting at the foot of the bed, and leaning over the bed, she felt the familiar urge to push a few hours later. She got settled in the bed and continued to labor on all fours (she hates laboring on her back!) until her doctor was ready and her son was about to be born. He was born after a few contractions, and she can still vividly remember every moment. It was truly a dream birth and an answer to prayer. She had some retained placenta after birth that required her doctor to have to manually extract, but other than that, it was a smooth recovery.

Emergency C-Section & Healing Cesarean Birth after Ectopic Pregnancy

cesarean birth

Merasha is sharing the story of her 2 births and ectopic pregnancy.  Her first birth was planned to be an unmedicated hospital birth, but due to complications baby was born via c-section. Merasha struggled with breastfeeding and her mental health after the birth of her daughter while juggling her last undergrad course for her Bachelor’s degree just 2 weeks after the birth of her daughter. In the winter of 2021 Merasha and her husband learned they were unexpectedly pregnant. the pregnancy came during a time Merasha had a lapse in health insurance. unfortunately the pregnancy ended due to being ectopic and needing surgery, alone, because of strict visitor rules around covid. however, Merasha recovered and soon after she and her husband became pregnant again.

skin to skin csection

Merasha and her husband expected for pregnancy and birth to be uneventful; but baby had other plans. merasha went into labor 5 weeks early at work and was placed on bed rest in hopes to get her to full term, with a 2 year old at home. baby made his entrance about two weeks later via emergency c-section. baby number two went from being a planned c section, to a possible vbac to an emergency c section but due to more prepping, having a doula, and receiving therapy for her pregnancy and birth PTSD Merasha was able to have the redemption birth she dreamt of, even when all things didn’t go to plan. Three Unmedicated Births: Shoulder Dystocia, Precipitous Accidental Home Birth, and Planned Homebirth

waterbirth

Alicia’s first baby was born at a free-standing birth center with midwives and all was going well until, during pushing, thick meconium was present in her amniotic fluid which added to the urgency when the 11lb 1oz baby’s shoulders got stuck and needed help from her midwife to get out. After resuscitation, her daughter went straight to the NICU and stayed there for a week. Her second birth was wildly opposite when her water broke just before midnight and her baby was accidentally born in the bathroom just after 2am. That FER kicked in but she was able to keep from pushing until her midwife arrived and the baby flew out in 3 pushes. Her third birth was not quite as fast, but smooth and straightforward at home after driving herself to her midwife appointment only to have her cervix checked (she was 8cm dilated!) and told “Go home! You’re having a baby today!!” Sure enough, her third baby was born just over an hour after arriving back at home.

Cozy Earth sheets are temperature-regulating and incredibly soft which is so perfect for all of the life stages we talk about on The Birth Hour. Seriously, if you are a hot sleeper these are a game changer and worth the investment! They’d also make a great baby registry item. Cozy Earth provided an exclusive offer for our listener’s today. Up to 40% off site wide when you use the code “BIRTHHOUR”
